Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg, South Africa

See full description & specifications

One thing I really loved seeing wherever we went in South Africa, no matter who we spoke with, was a deep love, appreciation, and respect for Nelson Mandela. didn't matter where you came from or what color you are, I never heard a bad word about the man in multiple conversations. I don't know of any leader in the United States that i could say that about in my generation!

This beautiful building and sculpture are in Cape Town City Hall. The sculpture is where he first addressed the nation after being released from prison and also once again after becoming the leader of South Africa.

and just down the street was the government building where you had to register what race you were if there were any questions during the apartheid government. I have included the photo of the bench as a grim reminder of what Nelson and the people fought against.

we saw numerous quotes of Mandela's in a couple different parks around the country. here are some of them:

“As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same”

“I like friends who have independent minds because they tend to make you see problems from all angles.”

“If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.”

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies.”

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
